About

In January 2009 I was diagnosed with uterine fibroids. This was good news because, for some time until then, I genuinely believed I was on the last leg of life. Having recently watched helplessly while someone dear to me died of ovarian cancer, I had been terrified and was now much relieved.

However, living with fibroids isn’t always easy, for me or my family. Information about uterine fibroids often shies away from the troublesome, relying on this old chestnut:

“Most women with uterine fibroids have no pain, side effects or excessive bleeding, in fact many women may not even know they have them at all!”

Yeah, thanks for that.

While I’m genuinely happy for those women whose fibroids give them nothing to worry about, finding quality information on living with – and dealing with the consequences of – fibroids that do cause problems is nigh on impossible.

This blog has a dual purpose:

  • As an outlet for me, or you, to have a damn good vent about the whole taboo, messy, inconvenient, exhausting business, and
  • As a way of gathering together information about fibroids themselves and about how to best deal with the unfortunate ripples of grimness troublesome fibroids send out into our wider lives.

Don’t have fibroids but do have ridiculously heavy periods? You’re more than welcome here too.

Most likely, things may get a bit graphic and detailed. You should expect heavy sarcasm, black (or dark red) humour and some swearing too, from time to time (especially when the painkillers are running low)
